Our third event took place on a cold, wintery evening, a winter that took its toll on one of our readers. Flarf poet Sharon Mesmer was scheduled to perform but slipped on a patch of ice and sprained her ankle. Lawsuits against Old Man Winter are being discussed with our legal department. I read some of her hilarious poems in between the other readings, so she was there in spirit.
Our other intrepid readers were Felix Gilman, author of The Half-Made World, Thunderer and Gears of the City and Jeffrey Ford, author of The Drowned Life, The Shadow Year and many other books.
To make matters worse, because I am a professional type professional person I forgot the video camera, and so was only able to capture a few minutes of each reader on an ordinary digital camera.
Here is Jeffrey Ford reading from the short story "The Double of My Double is Not My Double", which will be published in the anthology Eclipse Four:
Felix Gilman read from a short story that takes place in the same western-steampunk wold as his novel The Half-Made World. The story is called "Lightbringers and Rainmakers" and is available to read on Tor.com:
And last but not least, here's Sharon Mesmer reading at a completely different event, including her doing two of the poems I did in her honor, "Annoying Diabetic Bitch" and "Squid Vs. Assclown":
Much thanks to our readers, the band, WORD bookstore and their wonderful event coordinator Jenn and everyone else involved.
FOR THE COMPLETEST
Here's the original announcement of the event:
Join us for steampunk western magical realism in a novel thats garnered rave reviews from Ursula Le Guin, The Onion AV Club, Locus and more, Felix Gilman's The Half-Made World. Join us for New York Times Notable and multi-award-winning writer of the unsettling and sublime Jeffrey Ford. Join us for flarf poetry with Fullbright scholar and New York Foundation for the Arts fellow Sharon Mesmer, author of Annoying Diabetic Bitch. Join us for music once more by the miraculous John Pinamonti and the Atomic Nevada Two. Join us! Resistance is NOT AWESOME. Hosted by Eric Rosenfield.
So many brave souls ventured out into the cold to witness FELIX GILMAN and JEFFREY FORD along with JOHN PINAMONTI AND THE ATOMIC NEVADA TWO. Despite being beset with problems including flarf poet Sharon Mesmer being attacked by ice and spraining her ankle and so not being able to make, and my video camera eloping with my iPad and being MIA, everything worked out and a great time was had by all. Stay tuned for the after reading and announcement for the next event...
